Studio Design

I'm working on redesigning my quilting studio. I need some more storage for fabric as well as customer quilts. I could also use a space to put my domestic sewing machine and a better pressing surface.

I've been playing with graph paper and studying kitchen cabinetry that is available commercially. They make a kitchen cabinet that has a fold-up ironing board in it. I'm going to see if I can see one on display to determine if it will work for me.

My plan is to use the wall where my "design board" is now to put a line of base cabinets. I'll use a section of it for my domestic machine so I have to find a sewing cabinet that will fit there. I don't like to face the wall when I'm sewing, but so far I haven't figured out any other location for the DSM.

Good thing I'm still in the paper phase of this project. There still needs to be insulation installed as well as drywall. I hope to get started on that phase soon, though. I am soooooo tired of working in the dungeon-like atmosphere of my unfinished basement. It's getting so depressing that I find myself avoiding quilting. :(

Zipper Leader Tutorial - Part 1

I removed my old zippers yesterday and completed attaching my new zippers. Along the way I made 2 additional sets of zipper leaders so I have the ability to have 3 quilts ready to zip on if I need to. As promised, I took photos of the steps and will post them in stages. These directions are my own and you may be able to find other instructions out the internet. This is something I came up with on trial and error. The first set of zipper leaders I made were with garment zipper that you buy by the yard at a fabric store. They didn't work out the way I wanted. They kept separating on their own. So now I have 8 yards of zipper to use in other projects. First off you'll need some materials and supplies. 1. Canvas Duck - I purchased 4 yards of 60" wide canvas so I wouldn't have to seam the leaders. This is enough to make 5 sets of 2 leaders. Buy the length to match the length of your zippers. 2. Glue Basting

If you want to try glue basting your bindings, check out Sharon Schamber's website for a video on the technique. This is whom I learned it from. Click on the "Free Area" link on the left, then "Free Area" on the next page. Scroll down to the December 2007 video "Binding the Angel". Sharon gives details of her glue basted binding technique. I do my glue basting a bit different, but the results are the same. I glue baste the binding all the way around the quilt before stitching it down. When I get to the end of the binding, I glue baste the miter, stitch that miter, then glue baste that area down. Then I go ahead and stitch the entire binding down. The 2 best tips I feel are to use "school glue" like Elmers or Rose Art. I've used both and they both work well. Don't use "All Purpose Glue". The 2nd tip is to heat set your glue with a hot iron. It dries the glue quickly. The glue washes out easily so you won't have any residu
